Ricca Brothers Brick Oven, Hammonton, NJ

Date: 06/08/2018
Location: Hamminton, NJ
Pizza Ordered: Quattro Formaggi (4 Cheese Pizza)
Website: www.riccabrothers.com/
My brother and I decided to split this pie and we were not disappointed. The sauce was rich and tasty. The cheeses were blended beautifully and did not easily slide off the slice to create a mess. The seasoning really added to the flavor profile. The bottom of the pizza was crispy and the crust was fluffy. The bread used for the base and the crust is noticeably different than what I am used to seeing as crust. It was fluffier and tasted more like a freshly baked bread. I thought it was a little bland for my taste, but overall did not take away from the greatness of the pizza.

The atmosphere is rustic and country. Tables were large tree trunks glossed over and polished nicely. The eating area was large and could fit a decent sized dinner party. There was fancier glassware on the side, which gave me the impression that a group could enjoy a more formal dinner at this establishment. This eatery also has its own bakery and offers artisan breads, pastries and other deserts. Overall, the meal was pleasant and I would like to take my girlfriend back here one night if I ever return to the area.

Italy's Restaurant & Pizzeria, Phillipsburg, NJ

Date: 6/21/2019 Location: Phillipsburg, NJ Pizza Ordered: Plain, White, and Sicilian Website: https://italysrestaurant.com/#home Italy's is a small local pizza joint that has the appearance of your typical neighborhood pizzeria. Lovely paintings of Italy adorn the walls and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. I was extra hungry, so I went with my usual plain slice and added a white slice and a Sicilian slice. The meal came with complimentary bread that was pleasantly fluffy and had a good mix of herbs and spices on it. The plain had pretty decent sauce and cheese and the charred crust was good, but a bit burnt in some places. The white was very fluffy with a good helping of cheese. The square slice had really great sauce and parmesan and a nice amount of fluff to the base. Overall, I would say Italy's puts out a good average slice of pizza.

Star Tavern, South Orange, NJ

Date: 7/25/2017 Location: South Orange, NJ Pizza Ordered: Plain and Works Website: www.startavern.net/ Star Tavern is a busy bar and pizzeria in South Orange, New Jersey. There is some parking at the actual building and there is a lot next door with additional parking (which you'll need to use if you go around dinner time). The wait staff is very helpful, polite, and works quick! The atmosphere is very cool and somewhat retro but also quite noisy as you'd expect a popular bar to be. There are arcade games, booths, plenty of posters, neon signs, and a bar seating area. The pizza is fantastic. Star Tavern has some of the thinnest crust I've ever experienced on a pizza. The base was super thin and pleasantly crispy. The ingredients were all delicious and I find myself agreeing with Pete Genovese when he calls this the gold--standard of thin crust pizza in NJ. Just remember that because the crust and base is so thin and because the pizza tastes so good, you'll likely ...

Central Pizzeria, Somerville, NJ

Date: 6/23/2018 Location: Somerville, NJ Pizza ordered: Plain and Chicken Parmesan Website:  http://www.centralpizzerianj.com/ I stopped into Central Pizzeria at the end of a pizza crawl through Somerset. There is a decent amount of seating and the wall decorations are funny and entertaining. There wasn't much selection, but I went with a classic plain slice and a chicken parmesan slice. The chicken parm slice was okay. There was a mix of mozzarella and parmesan cheeses on the slice. The chicken was plain and the crust was generic and didn't stand out. The plain slice was slightly gummy and undercooked, but did have a nice mixed cheese flavor. The slice was a little light on sauce and overall wasn't much to brag about.
